Scotiabank Celebrates 55 Years of Service to the Virgin Islands Community

November 02, 2018 – This year, Scotiabank USVI is celebrating 55 years of service to the Virgin Islands. The bank opened its first branch in St. Thomas, Market Square on October 7, 1963. From its 1832 roots in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Scotiabank now services over 25 million customers in more than 50 countries around the world.

During 55 years of business in the territory, Scotiabank has utilized its relationships and experience to provide a comprehensive range of products and services. Through initiatives such as the Scotiabank Bright Future program, the bank’s charitable efforts are aimed at being relevant and responsive to the needs of the Virgin Islands community.

“Over the years, our operations have encountered many challenges but we have remained steadfast in our commitment to manage through the times and to continue serving our clients and our communities. We are happy to have reached this milestone and thank all of our staff for their contribution to this great organization,” said Denis Vaz, Vice President & Head, Scotiabank U.S. Caribbean.

As part of the 55th anniversary celebration, Scotiabank donated $10,000 to the University of the Virgin Islands. The presentation took place at a recent Chamber of Commerce “Business After Hours” event held at the Altona Branch on St. Thomas. The UVI Scotiabank Scholarship Fund has supported students who attend the University, with a total of over $350,000 since the initial gift in 1986. This year’s recipients are Deney Matthew, a senior on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix and Felicia Fontelle who attends the St. Thomas campus.
